Mon Dec 16 10:10:00 UTC 2024: **Icy Roads Expected to Cause Hazardous Commute in Tri-State Area**
**New York, NY –** A winter weather advisory is in effect for parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut due to overnight light snow and freezing rain. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous driving conditions, particularly during the Monday morning commute.
Northeastern Pennsylvania is expected to receive up to four inches of snow and sleet, transitioning to a light glaze of ice. While the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut areas are forecast to receive less than an inch of snow, the transition to freezing rain overnight poses a significant risk of icy roads, especially in untreated areas and at higher elevations. Ice accumulation is predicted to range from a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch, with western Orange County potentially seeing up to an inch of ice. The Poconos region of Pennsylvania may experience the heaviest snowfall and ice accumulation.
The New York State Thruway Authority is preparing to clear roads and has pre-treated them, but spokeswoman Jennifer Givner urges drivers to allow extra travel time and reduce speeds. Forecasters predict that while roads will likely remain icy during the morning rush due to below-freezing temperatures, conditions should improve as temperatures rise later in the day. However, bridges and overpasses may remain icy even after main roads have thawed.
