**Rourkela, Odisha:** A Panchayat Extension Officer (PEO) and his brother-in-law, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police, have been arrested in Odisha for the premeditated murder of the PEO’s pregnant wife. Deben Kumar Behera, 35, and ASI Satya Narayan Behera, 48, were apprehended by Rourkela Police following an investigation into the death of Shamyamayee Behera.

Initially, Deben Kumar reported that his wife was killed during a robbery attempt where unidentified assailants shot her and stole her jewelry. However, discrepancies in his statement and forensic evidence led police to suspect foul play.

According to DIG of Police (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai, the investigation revealed that Deben Kumar murdered his wife because she opposed his extramarital affair. His brother-in-law, Satya Narayan, assisted in concealing the murder weapon, a country-made pistol, along with three live rounds and one spent casing. Police also seized a Scorpio vehicle (OD14AC3531) linked to the crime.

The incident took place in Jhirdapali village, Sundargarh district. Shamyamayee was rushed to Bonai Sub-Divisional Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A special police team was formed to investigate the crime, meticulously piecing together evidence and uncovering the truth behind the seemingly straightforward robbery narrative. Both accused are currently in police custody.
