Fri Dec 13 22:02:19 UTC 2024: ## Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend: A Colorful Celestial Display

**London, UK** – Stargazers are in for a treat as the Geminid meteor shower, known for its vibrant displays and high meteor count, reaches its peak this weekend. The shower, visible from December 4th to 20th, will be most spectacular in the early hours of Saturday, December 14th, for UK viewers.

Unlike most meteor showers originating from comets, the Geminids are debris from an asteroid, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere at speeds up to 150,000 mph. This creates streaks of light in a variety of colors – white, yellow, green, red, and blue – due to the elements present in the celestial debris. The Royal Observatory Greenwich notes the shower is intensifying yearly.

According to astronomer Jake Foster of the Royal Observatory Greenwich and Shyam Balaji, a researcher at King’s College London, the best viewing time is around 2 AM local time, though viewing can begin from mid-evening. While up to 150 meteors per hour are possible, the full moon on Sunday will obscure some fainter meteors.

No special equipment is needed; a dark location away from light pollution, warm clothing, and patience are sufficient. Look towards the constellation Gemini, near the bright star Castor, as this is the radiant point from which the meteors appear to originate.

Weather conditions are mixed. While northern parts of the UK may experience rain Friday night, clearer skies are anticipated for much of England and Wales by Saturday night. Those with less favorable conditions can still catch some meteors into next week, before the Ursid meteor shower peaks on December 23rd, though it will be less intense.
