Fri Dec 13 18:38:30 UTC 2024: ## Dutch Court Rejects Bid to Halt Arms Sales to Israel

**The Hague, Netherlands** – A Dutch court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by ten pro-Palestinian NGOs seeking to halt the Netherlands’ export of weapons to Israel and trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The Hague district court ruled on Friday that the state has discretion in its policies and that judicial intervention wasn’t warranted.

The NGOs, citing high civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict in Gaza and referencing a recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) order, argued that the Netherlands, as a signatory to the Genocide Convention, had a duty to prevent genocide. They claimed Israel was committing genocide and apartheid, using Dutch-supplied weapons. The court rejected these claims, stating there was no basis for a complete ban on arms exports.

The ruling comes amidst escalating tensions in Gaza, with a recent Israeli air strike killing at least 40 Palestinians. The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others, alleging crimes against humanity. The UN has also highlighted a severe humanitarian crisis in northern Gaza, with widespread food and aid shortages.

The NGOs, including Al-Haq, strongly condemned the court’s decision, describing it as an “abominable injustice” and accusing the Netherlands of abandoning basic international law. They are reportedly considering an appeal. Amnesty International’s recent accusation of Israeli genocide in Gaza further fuels the controversy, while Israel continues to deny such allegations.
