**Imphal, Manipur –** Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has reiterated his government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and land ownership of the state’s indigenous population. Speaking at the Manipur Indigenous People’s Cultural Exchange Festival in Kamjong district on Friday, Singh emphasized the need for constitutional protection for these communities, citing concerns over demographic shifts and deforestation.
Singh highlighted the “Go to Hills” campaign, initiated to strengthen shared cultural and historical ties with indigenous communities. He acknowledged the challenges posed by external factors affecting the demographic balance, stating that the government is actively working to ensure the indigenous people’s rights, respect, and land ownership. The government’s efforts include the development of an indigenous ethnic cultural center in Makhel village.
Addressing critics, Singh urged them to examine population growth and electoral roll changes, suggesting a study of satellite imagery to understand deforestation and population increases in specific communities. He challenged critics to present evidence of wrongdoing, stating that mere gossip will not protect the land and indigenous people. He called for unity among all recognized tribes in the state to protect their land.
The Chief Minister also praised the success of the anti-drug campaign, citing the destruction of over 100 acres of illegal poppy cultivation. He concluded by extending his Christmas wishes and appealing for peace in the state. The festival itself, supported by the government, aimed to foster unity among the state’s diverse indigenous groups.
