Fri Dec 13 17:53:58 UTC 2024: ## Mangaluru’s Alake Market to be Privatized After Years of Underutilization

**Mangaluru, Karnataka (December 14, 2024)** – Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Mayor Manoj Kumar announced Friday that the underutilized Alake Market will be handed over to a private operator. The market, inaugurated four years ago, currently has only four of its 25 stalls occupied, all selling non-vegetarian food.

These stalls will be relocated to a designated parking area to make way for the private management. The MCC will select the operator through a bidding process, with the chosen entity responsible for paying rent to the corporation. The Mayor stated that this decision comes after years of low occupancy.

Meanwhile, construction of a new central market under a public-private partnership (PPP) model is nearing completion, expected to be finished within five months. This new facility will boast a total area of 5 lakh sq ft, with 1.5 lakh sq ft allocated to the MCC for rental purposes and 3.5 lakh sq ft for the building’s developer.
