**Coimbatore, December 13, 2024** – The much-anticipated 24/7 drinking water supply project in Coimbatore is facing significant delays, leaving residents frustrated with unrepaired roads and inconsistent water service. Originally scheduled for completion in 2025, the project, executed by Suez India, is now expected to conclude in July 2025.
The project, covering 60 older wards, has been plagued by poor planning and slow progress, according to residents and local councilors. Roads dug up for pipe-laying have remained unrepaired for months, creating hazardous conditions. Residents report inaccessible roads due to leaking pipes and uneven surfaces. In some areas, such as Srinivasa Nagar, water leakage from Suez pipelines is a persistent problem. Further compounding the issue, residents complain about inconsistent water supply with no clear schedule provided.
Councilors have expressed their dissatisfaction, citing a lack of communication regarding project timelines and progress from both the Coimbatore Corporation and Suez India. One councilor stated that most councillors lack basic project details and are unaware of completion dates.
While a Corporation engineering official claims that road repairs are underway and will accelerate after pipe-laying is complete, a Suez India official stated that 25% of the pipe-laying remains. The official also promised to address complaints of leakages and irregular water supply shortly. However, the delay and incomplete work have sparked a blame game between the Corporation and Suez India, leaving residents to bear the brunt of the inconvenience.
