**New Delhi:** Newly elected Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra delivered a powerful maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on Friday, launching a scathing attack on the ruling BJP government. Her speech covered a wide range of issues, from the Indian Constitution to the Adani Group controversy and the plight of farmers.
Gandhi began by paying tribute to security personnel who lost their lives in a 2001 terror attack on Parliament. She then went on to defend the legacies of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, while acknowledging Indira Gandhi’s mistakes during the Emergency. She challenged the government’s focus on the past, questioning their silence on contemporary issues. “You keep talking about the past. When will you talk about the present?” she asked.
Gandhi asserted that the Indian Constitution is not an RSS document, emphasizing its role as a guarantor of justice and hope for all citizens. She accused the government of undermining the constitution through policies like lateral entry and privatization, claiming they would have even changed the Constitution itself if the election results were different.
She also highlighted the struggles of farmers across India, criticizing policies that she claimed favored big industrialists over the farming community. She expressed concern over the growing atmosphere of fear in the country, stating that those who spread fear live in its shadow.
Gandhi further highlighted the tragic case of the Unnao rape victim, whose death after being set ablaze, brought the issue of violence against women to the forefront of the debate. She described the incident, recounting her visit to the victim’s home and expressing outrage over the brutal attack. She sharply criticized Prime Minister Modi for his apparent lack of response to such incidents, despite often displaying the Constitution in Parliament.
Gandhi’s speech marks a significant entry into national politics and signals a strong opposition voice against the ruling government.
