**Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, December 12, 2024** – Approximately sixty students from Jaigad Vidya Mandir school in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, were hospitalized Thursday after experiencing severe eye irritation and other symptoms caused by fumes released from a nearby JSW Energy Limited thermal power plant.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. during maintenance and cleaning of a storage tank at the plant, located less than 2 kilometers from the school. Initially, over 30 students reported symptoms; this number rose to 60 by the end of the day, including 53 boys, six girls, and one woman. Three students were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with nausea, breathing difficulties, and stomach aches, but their condition is now reportedly stable.
Police officials stated that the fumes contained ethyl mercaptan, a gas used in various industrial applications, which can irritate the eyes, lungs, and skin. While JSW Energy initially denied involvement, claiming their plant does not have gas storage facilities, the police confirmed the release of the gas during the maintenance work.
JSW Energy subsequently released a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange emphasizing their commitment to safety and adherence to stringent protocols. The company asserted that they prioritize the well-being of employees and the community. The incident is under investigation.
