**Mumbai, India –** Newly released CCTV footage shows the driver of the BEST electric bus involved in Monday’s deadly Kurla accident fleeing the scene with two backpacks. The footage, which went viral on Wednesday, depicts driver Sanjay More retrieving the bags from the bus cabin and escaping through a shattered window following the crash that killed seven and injured 42.
The out-of-control bus careened through pedestrians and vehicles on SG Barve Marg in Kurla (West), damaging 22 vehicles before coming to a halt. Multiple clips circulating online show the chaos inside the bus as passengers struggled to escape the wreckage.
More, who had only received 10 days of training on electric vehicles, has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He remains in police custody until December 21.
In the wake of the tragedy, BEST and MSRTC officials met with private bus operators to address safety concerns. New measures under discussion include mandatory breathalyser tests and enhanced driver training. An internal investigation into the accident has also been ordered by the Maharashtra transport commissioner. The findings will be submitted to the state government.
