Thu Dec 12 18:38:26 UTC 2024: ## UN Overwhelmingly Approves Resolution Demanding Gaza Ceasefire, India Votes in Favor

**New York, December 13, 2024** – The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly approved two resolutions on the Israel-Hamas conflict, demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and reaffirming support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA). India voted in favor of both resolutions.

The first resolution, adopted Wednesday during the 10th emergency special session, garnered support from 158 nations, including India. Nine countries, including Israel and the United States, voted against it, while 13, including Albania and Ukraine, abstained. The resolution calls for a permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the full implementation of a June 2024 Security Council resolution outlining further steps towards de-escalation, including the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. The resolution also stressed the need for unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza and adherence to international law regarding the treatment of detainees.

The second resolution, adopted Tuesday, called for the withdrawal of Israel from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 and reiterated the call for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. Again, India joined 157 nations in voting in favor. Eight countries voted against, and seven abstained. Both resolutions underscore the international community’s commitment to a two-state solution.
