**KOCHI, December 13, 2024** – P. Balachandrakumar, a filmmaker who played a crucial role in the sensational 2017 Malayalam actress rape case, passed away on Friday morning at the age of 62. He had been receiving treatment for kidney and heart ailments at a private hospital in Chengannur.

Balachandrakumar, once a close friend of actor Dileep, became a key witness against him after alleging in December 2021 that Dileep possessed visuals of the alleged sexual assault. His allegations, supported by submitted audio clips, led to further investigations and additional charges against Dileep, including conspiracy to murder, destruction of evidence, and attacks on investigators. Balachandrakumar claimed he learned of Dileep’s alleged involvement during a discussion at Dileep’s residence. His testimony significantly impacted the ongoing case. Prior to his involvement in the case, Balachandrakumar directed the 2013 film *Cowboy*.
