**Hyderabad, India** – Popular Telugu actor Allu Arjun was arrested today in connection with a stampede at a screening of his film “Pushpa 2” that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman and injuries to a nine-year-old child. The arrest, which took place at his Jubilee Hills residence, has sparked a political firestorm.
Arjun, who was charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and voluntarily causing hurt, claims police forcibly entered his bedroom during the arrest. In a petition seeking a postponement of his arrest until Monday, he stated that he had requested to change clothes and send a representative with him, but the police did not comply. Videos subsequently emerged showing Arjun being escorted by police, seemingly calm, after sipping coffee. His family was present during the arrest.
The incident occurred on December 4th when Arjun made an unscheduled appearance at the Sandhya Theatre, leading to a surge of fans and the subsequent stampede. Arjun expressed deep sorrow over the woman’s death and promised to personally meet her grieving family.
The arrest has drawn significant political backlash. BRS leader KT Rama Rao criticized the treatment of Arjun, calling it “the pinnacle of insecurity” on the part of the government, while BJP leader T Raja Singh demanded respect for the actor’s contributions to the film industry. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy denied any government involvement in the arrest.
Arjun has since undergone a medical check-up, as per standard procedure. His petition requesting a postponement of his arrest is expected to be heard shortly.
