**Washington, D.C. (December 13, 2024)** – President Joe Biden has granted clemency to nearly 1,500 individuals, including four Indian-Americans, in the largest single-day act of clemency in recent times. The pardons and sentence commutations, announced Thursday, reflect the President’s commitment to second chances and addressing sentencing disparities, particularly for non-violent drug offenders.
Among those receiving clemency are Meera Sachdeva, Babubhai Patel, Krishna Mote, and Vikram Dutta. Sachdeva, a 63-year-old former Mississippi cancer center director, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2012 for fraud. Patel received a 17-year sentence in 2013 for healthcare and drug-related conspiracies. Mote, 54, was given a life sentence in 2013 for cocaine distribution. Dutta, 63, was sentenced to 235 months in 2012 for money laundering for a Mexican drug cartel.
President Biden stated that the action reflects America’s promise of second chances and aims to address inequalities in sentencing. The commutations largely affect individuals serving long sentences, many of whom would face lesser penalties under current laws. The 39 pardons were granted to individuals who demonstrated successful rehabilitation and a commitment to community betterment.
