**Chennai, December 13, 2024** – The Supreme Court has refused an urgent hearing on a plea challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to allow the Music Academy in Chennai to present the ‘Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award’ to Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna. The Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, stated the petition will be heard on Monday, December 16th.
The award, carrying a cash prize of ₹1 lakh, was scheduled for presentation on Sunday. However, the CJI suggested the award could be recalled if necessary.
Earlier today, a Madras High Court division bench overturned an interim injunction that had prevented the award’s presentation. The injunction had been granted following a civil suit filed by V. Shrinivasan, the grandson of M.S. Subbulakshmi, who argued that his grandmother’s will forbade the creation of any memorial in her name. The High Court justices noted the varied interpretations of the word “memorial” and the potential for future conflicting claims. The case highlights a conflict between the desire to honor a legendary Carnatic singer and the interpretation of her last wishes.
