Bengaluru, India – The suicide of Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, has sparked calls for major reforms in India’s family law. Subhash took his own life on Monday in Bengaluru, allegedly due to harassment by his wife and her family. A case of abetment to suicide has been filed against his wife, Nikita Singhania, her mother, father, and uncle.
Adding to the tragedy, Subhash’s mother-in-law and brother-in-law have reportedly fled their home in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh police confirmed their disappearance, stating that they haven’t yet been contacted by Karnataka police. Meanwhile, Karnataka police are searching for Nikita Singhania.
Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud commented on the case at the Times Network India Economic Conclave, expressing concern over the time it takes to resolve such family disputes. He stated that the longer these cases take, the more complicated they become. He emphasized the need for a shift from a fault-based system to a mediation-based approach and called for comprehensive reform of India’s family law. He highlighted the difficulty of commenting on such a complex human relationship, describing it as a conflict “sometimes between right and right, sometimes between wrong and wrong.” He also stated he doesn’t believe the judicial system is currently equipped to handle such familial issues effectively. The case continues to unfold.
