Fri Dec 13 08:52:27 UTC 2024: ## Modi Cabinet Approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ Bill; Opposition Mounts Strong Resistance

**New Delhi:** The Modi cabinet has approved the “One Nation, One Election” bill, paving the way for its potential introduction in the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The move, however, has sparked immediate and vehement opposition from several parties.

While the government remains tight-lipped on the specifics, reports suggest the bill aims to synchronize national and state assembly elections. This would mark a significant change to India’s current electoral system, where elections are held separately at different times.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut criticized the bill, questioning its feasibility and suggesting it was rushed. He expressed doubts about the practical implications, particularly considering the varying electoral cycles of different states and regions. Raut also cast doubt on the Prime Minister’s ability to remain in power until 2029, the intended implementation year. He further claimed the bill served the ruling party’s self-interest and ignored the diverse needs of India’s federal structure.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav echoed these concerns, calling the proposal “unrealistic” and “undemocratic.” He argued that it would disenfranchise voters in states where governments may fall prematurely, undermining democratic representation. He characterized the initiative as a “conspiracy” against democracy designed to consolidate power.

The opposition’s criticism highlights concerns about the bill’s potential impact on democratic processes, fairness, and the practical challenges of implementing such a sweeping change. The coming weeks will be crucial as the bill faces further scrutiny and debate in Parliament.
