**Singapore** – D Gukesh has etched his name in history, becoming the youngest ever world chess champion at just 18 years old. The Chennai-based prodigy defeated China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in the 14th and final game of the World Chess Championship held in Singapore over 17 days. This victory shattered the record previously held by Garry Kasparov, who won the title at age 22.

Gukesh’s win secured him a prize of ₹11.45 crore (approximately $1.4 million USD), boosting his net worth to over ₹20 crore. He earned over ₹11 crore in just 17 days. Prior to the championship, his net worth was estimated at ₹8.26 crore. His earnings come from prize money and endorsements.

This is Gukesh’s third major title win in 2024, following victories in the Candidates Tournament and the Chess Olympiad, where he also secured an individual gold medal. He began playing chess at the age of seven and trains at the academy of five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, the only other Indian to hold the world championship title.
