Fri Dec 13 09:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Iranian Singer Faces Legal Action After Unlicensed Concert
**Tehran, Iran** – Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmady is facing legal repercussions for performing a concert without the necessary permits and in violation of “legal and religious norms,” according to Iran’s judiciary. A case has been filed against Ahmady and her band members – Ehsan Birghadar, Soheil Faghih Nasiri, Amin Taheri, and Amirali Pirnia – following a video of her performance, described as a “hypothetical concert,” that went viral online. The video shows Ahmady performing in a caravanserai while wearing what is considered immodest attire.
Ahmady’s concert has sparked widespread reaction due to the dual violations: her performance without a license, and her solo performance as a woman, which is forbidden under Iranian law. She previously gained attention for performing patriotic songs like “From the Blood of the Youth of the Homeland” and “Freedom’s Air,” the latter seen as an anthem for the ongoing women’s rights protests. Her latest performance was interpreted by many as an act of cultural resistance against the restrictions placed on women in Iran.
Ahmady’s career includes studio recordings and professional performances, notably a 2022 song titled “Freedom’s Air” which she described as a tribute to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement. This led to her summons to Tehran’s security prosecutor’s office and the seizure of her personal belongings. However, she continued to create music, recently releasing a song with poetry by Hushang Ebtehaj, further challenging the system.
Social media erupted with reactions. While some praised Ahmady’s courage, others expressed concern about the potential consequences. Human rights researcher, Rona Bahreini, lauded Ahmady’s action as a historical challenge to restrictive laws, while activists like Hossein Ronaghi highlighted the broader issue of suppressing women’s voices. Support also came from other Iranian musicians facing similar challenges, including Jastina, a rapper, and Mehdi Yarrahi, a singer currently under house arrest.
The incident highlights the ongoing struggle for artistic freedom and women’s rights in Iran. Previous cases, such as the arrest of Niouosha Ghorbani and Zara Esmaili for singing in public, underscore the significant challenges faced by female musicians within the country.
