**Dehradun, Uttarakhand –** In a poignant act of generosity amidst grief, a couple from Uttarakhand has donated the body of their newborn daughter to Doon Medical College for medical education and research. The baby girl, who died of a heart ailment just 60 hours after birth on December 8th, 2024, became the subject of what is believed to be one of the youngest body donations in India.
Ram Mahra and Nancy, the parents, were guided to the decision by their family doctor, who is associated with the Dadichi Dehdaan Samiti, an NGO promoting body and organ donation. While initially hesitant, the couple ultimately decided to donate their daughter’s body, enabling medical students to learn from her anatomy.
The NGO’s treasurer, Krishna Kumar Arora, stated that this donation is likely the youngest in the country, second only to a previous donation of a one-week-old infant’s body at AIIMS Delhi. The Anatomy Department of Doon Medical College received the donation on December 11th, 2024. The Dehdaan Samiti named the baby girl Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, highlighting the significance of her contribution to medical education.
Ms. Nancy, a homemaker, expressed her hope that by donating her daughter’s body, she is making her immortal and allowing her to serve a greater cause. Mr. Mahra, a machine operator, echoed her sentiment, emphasizing the family doctor’s guidance in their decision. The couple’s extended family supported their decision.
