**HATHRAS, Uttar Pradesh (December 12, 2024)** – Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the family of a Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday, four years after she died allegedly following a gang rape in September 2020. The visit comes as a renewed focus on the case, with Mr. Gandhi stating implicitly that the family’s concerns have not been adequately addressed. Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai confirmed the visit earlier in Lucknow. Congress leader Chandragupt Vikramaditya highlighted the Gandhis’ continued engagement with the family.
However, the visit drew criticism from the ruling BJP. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak accused Mr. Gandhi of seeking publicity, stating that a CBI investigation had already been conducted and justice served. Minister for Minorities Welfare Om Prakash Rajbhar echoed this sentiment, calling the visit a “gimmick” and questioning the need for a further review of the case.
The 19-year-old victim was allegedly gang-raped on September 14, 2020, and died on September 29, 2020, after being treated in Aligarh and Delhi. The cremation under contentious circumstances in the early hours of October 30, 2020, further fueled the controversy. The CBI subsequently filed a charge sheet against four accused. Mr. Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had previously met the family in October 2020, pledging to fight for justice.
