Wed Dec 11 16:20:25 UTC 2024: ## Kozhikode Corporation Aims to Eradicate Extreme Poverty
**Kozhikode, Kerala, December 12, 2024** – The Kozhikode Corporation Council held an emergency meeting yesterday to address extreme poverty within the city, aiming to become the first in Kerala to eradicate it completely. The meeting, notable for the low attendance of several councilors, saw the approval of a comprehensive plan to consolidate various social services.
According to Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed, 776 individuals in Kozhikode currently face extreme poverty. This includes 678 requiring regular food assistance, 658 needing healthcare, 18 needing pensions, and 49 requiring palliative care.
P. Divakaran, chairman of the welfare standing committee, stated that many of these needs are already being met, and the focus will shift to improving livelihoods, income generation, and housing. Further initiatives include expanding the palliative care network, installing CCTV cameras to deter illegal dumping, and upgrading public toilet facilities.
The meeting included contributions from various standing committee chairpersons and councilors. A symposium scheduled for December 19 will facilitate further discussions on the plan’s implementation. Concerns were raised about the poor attendance and punctuality of several council members.
