**Kabul, Afghanistan –** Khalil Haqqani, Afghanistan’s Minister for Refugees and uncle of the acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, was killed in a suicide bombing in Kabul on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. Two others also perished in the explosion, which struck the ministry’s offices. While no group immediately claimed responsibility, the Islamic State group’s affiliate in Afghanistan has been implicated in similar attacks in the past.
The attack marks the most high-profile assassination in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power three years ago. A previous attack in March 2023 killed a Taliban-appointed provincial governor.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Ishaq Dar, expressed deep shock and condemned the attack, offering condolences and stating Pakistan’s unequivocal condemnation of terrorism. Pakistan is reportedly in contact with Kabul for further details. Afghan officials have yet to release further information regarding the incident.
