Wed Dec 11 18:32:42 UTC 2024: ## New Zealand to Ban Greyhound Racing by 2026

**Wellington, New Zealand** – The New Zealand government announced on Tuesday the introduction of a bill to ban greyhound racing by 2026. The decision follows concerns over the high rate of injuries sustained by racing dogs and allegations of animal cruelty and doping within the industry.

The bill, introduced by Deputy Prime Minister Peters, will phase out the industry over the next 20 months to allow for the rehabilitation of racing dogs and retraining of industry personnel. Peters stated that the legislation would be passed urgently. A separate bill will also be introduced to prevent the unnecessary euthanasia of racing dogs.

The government aims to find homes for the approximately 2,900 racing greyhounds currently in the country. While commercial greyhound racing remains legal in countries such as Australia, Ireland, the UK, and the US, New Zealand’s move marks a significant step towards ending the practice. The industry has faced criticism for years, with accusations of mistreatment and unethical practices by some breeders. The government’s decision reflects a growing public awareness and concern for animal welfare.
