Wed Dec 11 17:35:02 UTC 2024: ## Pope and European Churches Sound Alarm on Human Rights Violations on Human Rights Day

**Vatican City/Geneva, December 11** – On Human Rights Day, Pope Francis and European Church leaders issued urgent calls for global action to protect fundamental human rights, highlighting the devastating impact of war and systemic injustices.

Marking the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Pope Francis tweeted his plea for governments to heed the cries for peace from those deprived of their basic rights by conflict. He emphasized that peace and the right to life are foundational to all other rights.

Echoing the Pope’s concerns, the Conference of European Churches (CEC) expressed deep worry over escalating human rights violations worldwide. CEC President Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain cited ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and North Karabakh, as well as the broader Middle East crisis, as evidence of growing threats to human dignity. He pointed to violations of religious freedom, rising inequality, and discrimination against refugees, migrants, and Roma communities as indicators of a weakening commitment to human rights.

Archbishop Nikitas stressed that the Churches’ commitment to defending the vulnerable compels them to advocate for the oppressed and fight for justice. CEC General Secretary Rev. Frank-Dieter Fischbach urged European governments and institutions to recommit to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and fulfill their international obligations. He reiterated the CEC’s dedication to upholding universal human rights as essential for peaceful coexistence.

This year’s Human Rights Day, themed “Our rights, our future, right now,” emphasized the crucial role of human rights as a preventative, protective, and transformative force for positive change. The combined messages from the Pope and the CEC serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for global cooperation to ensure the protection of human dignity for all.
