**KINSHASA, DRC (December 11, 2023)** – A concerning outbreak of an undiagnosed illness has claimed the lives of at least 31 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), prompting an urgent investigation by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since October 24th, 406 cases have been reported in the Panzi health zone of Kwango Province, with 71% of the deaths occurring in children under 15.
The WHO was alerted to the situation on November 29th by the Congolese Ministry of Public Health. Affected individuals are experiencing symptoms including fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches. Worryingly, all severe cases have presented with severe malnutrition, a factor believed to be exacerbating the situation. The remote and rural location of the outbreak, coupled with the ongoing rainy season and limited diagnostic capabilities, has hampered initial investigations.
WHO experts are currently on the ground collecting samples for laboratory testing to pinpoint the cause of the outbreak. Acute pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, measles, and malaria are being considered as potential causes, with malnutrition identified as a significant contributing factor. The possibility of multiple diseases contributing to the outbreak is also being explored. Teams are working to identify the transmission dynamics and actively search for new cases both within health facilities and the wider community. A rapid response team is deployed to strengthen the overall response and curb the spread of the illness. Results from the laboratory tests are eagerly awaited.
