Tue Dec 10 12:07:16 UTC 2024: ## Syrian Regime Collapses After Rebel Offensive
**Damascus, Syria – December 10, 2024** – The Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad has collapsed after a swift and decisive offensive launched by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militant group and its allies. The fall of the Assad regime, following twelve days of fighting, has sent shockwaves throughout the region.
The HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front, launched its offensive on November 27th, targeting Aleppo, Syria’s second-largest city. Government forces offered little resistance, allowing the rebels to capture Aleppo’s city center within four days. This rapid collapse triggered rebellions elsewhere in the country, with militias in the south and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the northeast also advancing against government positions.
Assad’s forces, weakened by years of civil war, crippling sanctions, and the lack of support from their traditional allies – Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah – crumbled under the pressure. Reports suggest Russia and Iran were unable to provide substantial assistance, with Iran reportedly evacuating personnel from the country.
By December 7th, the rebels had captured Homs, Syria’s third-largest city. The following day, Damascus fell, bringing an end to the Assad regime and the nearly 60-year rule of the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party. President Assad and his family have reportedly been granted political asylum in Moscow.
The sudden power vacuum leaves Syria fractured and vulnerable. Several powerful rebel factions – including the HTS, southern militias, the SDF, and the Alawite minority – now vie for control, creating uncertainty about the future of the country. External players, including Turkey, Jordan, Gulf states, Russia, and Israel, are poised to exert influence on the emerging political landscape. The situation is further complicated by the potential for conflict between these various factions.
