**Bengaluru, December 10, 2023** – Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, a prominent Indian politician and former Minister of External Affairs, passed away today at the age of 92. Krishna, who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan earlier this year, enjoyed a six-decade-long career in politics, holding various key positions including Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of Parliament (MP), Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Governor of Maharashtra.

His political journey began in the 1960s, starting as an independent MLA before joining the Praja Socialist Party. He served twice as an MP from Mandya constituency. A significant highlight of his career was leading the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to victory in 1999, subsequently becoming the Chief Minister of Karnataka. In a notable move, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March 2017 after a long stint with the Congress. He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra from December 2004 to March 2008 and as the Minister of External Affairs in the Manmohan Singh government. Krishna retired from active politics in January 2023. His contributions to Indian politics will be remembered for years to come.
