**Kyiv, Ukraine** – S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the latest installment in the popular post-apocalyptic video game series, has achieved phenomenal success, surpassing one million downloads and 117,000 concurrent players within 48 hours of its release on November 20th. This makes it the most successful Ukrainian-developed game to date, a significant achievement given the challenges faced by its developer, GSC Game World.
The game’s development was significantly impacted by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, forcing part of the team to relocate to Prague. Furthermore, the game became the target of a sophisticated Russian disinformation campaign, “Operation Matryoshka,” designed to undermine Ukrainian morale and spread misinformation. A fake Wired magazine video falsely claimed the game was used for military recruitment and data collection.
This success is bittersweet, however, as former GSC Game World developer Volodymyr Yezhov, who worked on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, was killed fighting in the Ukrainian army near Bakhmut in December 2022. The studio paid tribute to him, highlighting his contribution to the game and the country.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, set in a fictionalized Chornobyl Exclusion Zone after a second catastrophic event, blends first-person shooter and survival horror elements. Inspired by the Strugatsky brothers’ novel “Roadside Picnic” and Tarkovsky’s film “Stalker,” the game follows “Skif,” a Ukrainian whose life is shattered by a mysterious anomaly.
The disinformation campaign, identified by organizations like the Atlantic Council’s DFRLab and VIGINUM (France’s national security agency), is part of a broader Russian effort to flood social media and news outlets with false narratives about Ukraine and its allies.
Despite these challenges, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s success stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian gaming industry, showcasing its ability to thrive even amidst war and disinformation. The game joins other successful Ukrainian titles like the Metro series, which, although developed by a studio that relocated due to earlier political instability, shares similar post-apocalyptic themes. A new game, Glory to the Heroes, is even directly addressing the current conflict.
