Tue Dec 10 01:50:00 UTC 2024: **President Murmu Addresses Human Rights Day Challenges in India**

NEW DELHI (December 10, 2024) – President Droupadi Murmu today underscored India’s commitment to human rights in the face of evolving challenges, speaking at the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) Human Rights Day celebration. She highlighted India’s long-standing tradition of empathy and compassion, praising the NHRC’s proactive role in protecting the marginalized.

The President emphasized the government’s guarantee of civic, political, socio-economic, and cultural rights, including access to basic necessities like housing, healthcare, and education. However, she acknowledged emerging threats to human rights, particularly those stemming from the digital age. Cybercrime, misinformation, deepfakes, and privacy concerns were identified as critical issues requiring a safe and equitable digital environment.

Murmu also addressed the unique challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, noting the shift from human violators to potentially non-human intelligent agents, requiring a reevaluation of human rights discourse. Climate change, she stated, necessitates a global review of human rights frameworks, with India, as a voice for the Global South, taking a leading role in climate action through initiatives like the 2022 Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill and the LiFE Movement.

The President also highlighted the growing importance of mental health, especially for children and youth, urging stakeholders to address stress and the potential negative impact of the gig economy on mental well-being. She concluded by calling for a renewed commitment to justice, equality, and dignity, ensuring that no one is left behind in building a future where all individuals can live with dignity and fulfillment.
