**Mumbai, India –** A runaway electric bus claimed the lives of six people and injured at least 49 others in a horrific crash in Mumbai’s Kurla (West) area last night. The BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) bus, operating route 332, careened out of control around 9:45 pm, plowing into approximately two dozen vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, two-wheelers, and a police jeep, before crashing into the gates of a residential building.
Video footage shows the bus speeding past shops and striking parked vehicles before the devastating collision. Eyewitnesses reported the bus swerved uncontrollably over a 200-meter stretch. Among the deceased are Kannis Ansari (55), Afreen Shah (19), Anam Shaikh (20), Shivam Kashyap (18), Vijay Gaikwad (70), and Faruq Chaudhari (54). At least four police officers were among the injured.
The driver, Sanjay More, has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide. Police are investigating whether driver error, lack of experience (sources suggest he lacked significant heavy vehicle driving experience), or mechanical failure contributed to the accident. A blood test to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol is pending. The three-month-old Olectra bus, leased by BEST from EVEY Trans, will also undergo a technical inspection.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh (approximately $6,000 USD) for the families of each victim. The BEST undertaking will cover the medical expenses of the injured. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about public transportation safety in the city.
