Tue Dec 10 08:48:11 UTC 2024: ## Opposition to Move No-Confidence Motion Against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar

**New Delhi:** The opposition in India is preparing to file a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. The move, unprecedented in Indian parliamentary history, follows growing discontent over Dhankhar’s perceived bias in his handling of the house, particularly regarding the uproar surrounding the George Soros issue.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), and Trinamool Congress (TMC), are united in their effort. Sources indicate that over 70 Rajya Sabha members have already signed the motion, which requires a minimum of 50 signatures to be filed. While the opposition has previously attempted to initiate similar motions against Dhankhar, this marks the first time the effort has progressed to this stage. The opposition plans to table the motion on December 10th.

The opposition’s primary grievance stems from allegations of Dhankhar exhibiting partiality towards the ruling party. Their anger was further fueled by the handling of the debate surrounding George Soros, resulting in significant disruption in the Rajya Sabha. Other accusations against Dhankhar include arbitrarily silencing opposition leaders’ microphones, ignoring parliamentary procedures, and making personal remarks against opposition members.

While the motion can be introduced, its passage is highly unlikely given the opposition’s lack of numbers in the Rajya Sabha. Despite this, the opposition views the move as a significant political statement. Article 67(b) of the Indian Constitution outlines the procedure for removing the Vice President (who also serves as Rajya Sabha Chairman), requiring a majority vote in the Rajya Sabha and concurrence from the Lok Sabha. No Vice President has ever faced a successful no-confidence motion. This contrasts with the Prime Minister’s office; since 1963, 31 no-confidence motions have been brought against Prime Ministers, resulting in three successful removals.
