**Blacksburg, VA –** Acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni, a pivotal figure in the Black Arts Movement and a celebrated voice on civil rights, gender, and race, passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2024, at the age of 81. Her death, following a long battle with cancer, was confirmed by her friend and fellow writer Renee Watson.
Giovanni, known for iconic poems such as “Knoxville, Tennessee” and “Nikki-Rosa,” received widespread recognition for her prolific body of work. Her contributions earned her numerous awards, including the NAACP Image Award, the Rosa Parks Award, and the Langston Hughes Award, as well as a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album in 2004. She was a longtime professor of creative writing and literature at Virginia Tech.
A key figure of the Black Arts Movement (1965-1974), Giovanni’s writing often reflected her childhood experiences and her unwavering commitment to social justice. Her work championed Black and civil rights, and she candidly documented her personal struggles, including her fight against lung cancer. Her close friendships with cultural icons such as Rosa Parks, Aretha Franklin, James Baldwin, Nina Simone, and Muhammad Ali highlight her significant impact on the cultural landscape.
“She inspired generations of students, artists, activists, musicians, scholars and human beings, young and old,” Watson said in a statement. Fellow poet Kwame Alexander added, “We will forever be grateful for the unconditional time she gave to us, to all her literary children across the writerly world.” Giovanni is survived by her life-long partner, Virginia (Ginney) Fowler. Her legacy as a powerful and influential voice in American literature will undoubtedly endure.
