**Bengaluru, December 10:** S.M. Krishna, former Governor of Maharashtra and a veteran Indian politician, passed away this morning at the age of 92. Krishna, who had been unwell for the past few months, breathed his last at his Bengaluru residence around 2:45 AM.
A towering figure in Indian politics for over six decades, Krishna served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of Parliament (MP), Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Governor of Maharashtra. His illustrious career culminated in the award of the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2023.
Krishna’s political journey began in the 1960s, initially as an independent candidate, before joining the Praja Socialist Party. He served as a Member of Parliament twice (1968-1970 and 1971-1972) and later as an MLA from 1972 to 1977. He held the portfolio of Minister for Commerce and Industries and Parliamentary Affairs in the Devraj Urs cabinet in 1972. A significant highlight of his career was his leadership as President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), where he led the party to victory in the 1999 Assembly elections, subsequently becoming Chief Minister. Known for his innovative campaigning techniques, he was among the first to utilize large-scale election rallies, including the successful “Panchajanya Yatra” in 1999.
Despite joining the BJP in 2017, he remained politically inactive in recent years. He is survived by his wife Prema and two daughters, Shambhavi and Malavika. His legacy extends beyond politics; he was a brilliant law school graduate from the United States and hailed from Maddur, Mandya district in Karnataka. The final paragraph about the actor Kudle Badrike is unrelated and has been omitted.
