**Madurai, December 8, 2024** – Construction on the first phase of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai is officially underway. According to information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) request, a work order for the project, covering 2.18 lakh sq.m, has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro Ltd.
The ₹1,118 crore contract represents a portion of the project’s total ₹2,021 crore budget. Phase 1 will encompass the construction of an academic block, nursing college, undergraduate and postgraduate hostels, a dining hall, outpatient department, and various service zones. The Notice to Proceed (NTP) was issued on May 22, 2024, with an estimated completion time of 33 months.
Social activist R. Pandiaraja, who filed the RTI request, expressed concern over the staged release of funds. He emphasized the importance of timely fund disbursement to avoid delays in the already delayed project. While acknowledging that funds will be released incrementally based on construction progress, he urged AIIMS Madurai officials to ensure that the process remains efficient to prevent further setbacks.
