**Bengaluru, India – December 7, 2024** – A 20-year-old college student has detailed a terrifying encounter with an auto-rickshaw driver in Bengaluru, sparking outrage and calls for increased passenger safety measures. The student, who was returning from an internship, reported that the driver demanded an extra Rs 200 (approximately $2.40 USD) on top of the app-specified fare of Rs 380 for a 24km journey.
When the student refused, the driver allegedly entered the student’s paying guest accommodation and threatened violence. The situation escalated when the driver called two intoxicated associates, further intensifying the threats. Fearing for his safety, the student ultimately paid Rs 500.
The student, who shared his experience on X (formerly Twitter), included a video of the incident and screenshots of the fare discrepancy. He also reported that the driver used racial slurs and threatened further violence outside his workplace.
