**Doha, Qatar –** Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has urged national unity and calm in Syria following the reported overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad by opposition forces. Speaking at the Doha Forum on Sunday, Fidan emphasized the need for a peaceful transition and reconstruction, assuring neighboring countries that the new Syria should not pose a threat.
Fidan’s statement comes hours after opposition forces seized Damascus, bringing an end to Assad’s 12-year rule. He stressed the importance of inclusivity and reconciliation, calling for all minorities to be treated equally and urging the avoidance of revenge. He specifically called upon the Syrian opposition to reassure neighboring countries, including Turkey, that the new government will address existing problems and eliminate threats.
The Foreign Minister acknowledged the devastating impact of the Syrian civil war, which began in 2011, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of refugees. He praised the Astana process, a series of talks aimed at de-escalating the conflict, but criticized Assad for failing to reconcile with his people.
While Fidan could not confirm Assad’s whereabouts, he suggested the Syrian leader was likely no longer in the country. He underscored the need for all parties to act with prudence and avoid further destabilization of the region. Fidan concluded by stating that the international community must support the Syrian people in rebuilding their nation and facilitating the return of millions of refugees, many of whom currently reside in Turkey.
