**Chennai, December 9, 2024** – The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution today urging the Union government to revoke tungsten mining rights granted to Hindustan Zinc Limited in Nayakkarpatti village, Madurai district. The resolution, moved by Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan, cites concerns over environmental damage and the potential disruption of livelihoods.

The area, encompassing the biodiversity heritage site of Arittapatti, is home to historical monuments, rare species, and is considered a significant ecological area. Minister Duraimurugan condemned the Union government’s decision, claiming it disregarded the state’s objections and expressed concerns about the potential impact on the local population.

The resolution highlights the anxiety and protests among residents facing potential displacement and economic hardship due to the mining project. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin previously appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel the mining rights. While BJP floor leader Nainar Nagendran suggested the state should have acted sooner, he indicated that positive news regarding the issue is forthcoming. The state government is adamant in its opposition to the project, highlighting its commitment to protecting the environment and the livelihoods of its citizens.
