Mon Dec 09 06:12:39 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Residents Build “Speed Breaker” to Combat Flooding

**Chennai, December 9, 2024** – Residents of Salmas Corner Castle apartment in Choolaimedu have devised an innovative solution to persistent flooding: a creatively repurposed “speed breaker” at their entrance. Facing recurring inundation, particularly during the September 25th rainfall, the community constructed a one-foot-high barrier by partially cutting their gate and adding a brick and metal structure. The ₹25,000 project involved masonry and welding work.

This ingenious solution, which has piqued the interest of neighbours, effectively prevents floodwaters from entering their premises. However, residents caution that a functional rainwater harvesting system and stormwater drain connection are crucial to prevent waterlogging caused by the barrier itself. Following the success of the Salmas Corner Castle project, several residents on the same street are planning to replicate the solution.

A resident, writing on October 15th following a period of heavy rain, praised the effectiveness of the “speed breaker,” stating that it prevented severe waterlogging. The innovative approach highlights the resourcefulness of Chennai residents in tackling urban flooding challenges.
