**CHENNAI, December 8, 2024** – Several University of Madras students are making waves in the startup world, launching innovative companies with support from the university’s entrepreneurship development program, “Thulir.” Their success stories highlight the growing entrepreneurial spirit among young researchers in India.
Two notable examples are Vignesh Raju, a PhD candidate in analytical chemistry, who founded Graphine Nano Continuum, selling graphene oxide to various industries, and Karthik G., from the Department of Nuclear Physics, who developed a wireless ECG device utilizing AI and ML to assess cardiovascular disease risk. Karthik’s device, a more affordable alternative to existing technology, aims to improve early detection of heart conditions. Both received seed funding through the Thulir program, which saw 50 initial proposals narrowed down to five finalists.
Meanwhile, brothers Sanjay and Vijay Mainmaran, leveraging their individual skills in architecture and dentistry respectively, developed an LED-based heating device during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their invention, born from curiosity and experimentation, has already been patented and is being incubated at Mohamed Sathak Engineering College. They have since expanded into board game design, showcasing their versatility and entrepreneurial drive.
These success stories underscore the impact of university support and mentorship in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students. The University of Madras’s commitment to nurturing young talent is clearly contributing to a vibrant startup ecosystem in Chennai.
