Sun Dec 08 20:49:39 UTC 2024: ## McLaren Wins First Constructors’ Championship in 26 Years; Hamilton Signs Off with Stunning Drive

**Abu Dhabi, UAE –** McLaren clinched their first Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship since 1998 in a dramatic Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Lando Norris securing victory and the team’s ninth title overall. The win capped a remarkable resurgence for McLaren, just seven years after finishing second to last in the standings.

Starting from pole position, Norris held off a strong challenge from Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz to win by 5.8 seconds. However, the race wasn’t without its anxieties for McLaren. Team-mate Oscar Piastri was spun around at the first corner by Max Verstappen, requiring a pit stop and later incurring a 10-second penalty for a subsequent collision. Despite this setback, Norris drove flawlessly, securing the championship for McLaren.

Sainz finished second, with Charles Leclerc completing a Ferrari double podium after a stunning charge from the back of the grid. Ferrari’s hopes of a last-minute championship upset were dashed, ending the season 21 points behind McLaren.

Lewis Hamilton, in his final race for Mercedes after 12 years, delivered a memorable performance. Starting 16th, he fought his way through the field to finish fourth, overtaking teammate George Russell on the last lap in a thrilling move that Toto Wolff described as “amazing.” Hamilton’s charge was a fitting end to his highly successful Mercedes career.

Verstappen, already crowned Drivers’ Champion, finished sixth after his early collision with Piastri and a subsequent 10-second penalty. Pierre Gasly secured seventh for Alpine, securing sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship. Sergio Perez’s season ended early with a spin caused by Valtteri Bottas.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown lauded Norris’s performance, highlighting his crucial role in securing the championship. Norris himself expressed his joy, emphasizing the team’s incredible journey and transformation. The win represents a significant milestone for McLaren, a testament to their hard work and strategic vision.
