**PATNA, Bihar —** Protests by Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) aspirants in Patna escalated on Friday, turning violent after police used a lathi-charge to disperse a crowd demonstrating against changes to the upcoming 70th BPSC Preliminary Examination.
Aspirants are demanding the exam revert to a “one shift, one paper” format, rejecting the commission’s decision to use a marks normalization process for the multiple-shift exam. They argue the normalization process is unfair and could negatively impact their performance.
The protests, initially peaceful, intensified near the BPSC office, leading to road blockades. Police intervened, using force to clear the barricades and disperse the protesters. Some protesters alleged injuries during the lathi-charge, a claim denied by police who stated only mild force was used.
The situation was further inflamed by rumors that popular Patna tutor and YouTuber, Khan Sir, had been arrested for supporting the protests. Khan Sir, who visited the Gardani Bagh locality where many protesters gathered to show solidarity, clarified that he had visited the police station voluntarily to meet detained students and was not arrested. Police confirmed this account.
Despite the protests and widespread student anger, the BPSC has remained firm in its decision. The commission confirmed the exam will proceed as scheduled on December 13th, with no changes to the exam process, including the use of normalization. This decision has further fueled student outrage. Approximately five lakh candidates are expected to take the exam across 925 centers in Bihar. The protests continue, with students demanding a reversal of the exam rules before the scheduled date.
