**LOS ANGELES** – Bill Lawrence, the creator behind hit shows like “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking,” is bringing back his beloved medical sitcom, “Scrubs,” to ABC. While details are still scarce, 20th Television is developing a new iteration of the series for the network, marking a return to the show’s original home (ABC Studios, now part of 20th Television).
Though Lawrence is involved, he will not serve as showrunner if the project moves forward. No cast members are currently attached, though Zach Braff, who played J.D. in the original series, has expressed strong interest in returning. In an October interview with Variety, Braff stated he’d be “definitely” on board for a limited run of episodes.
The original “Scrubs,” which ran for nine seasons (2001-2010) across NBC and ABC, gained critical acclaim and a devoted fan base for its unique blend of medical drama and quirky humor, memorable characters, and inventive cutaway gags. The show garnered 17 Emmy nominations throughout its run and continues to enjoy popularity, as evidenced by the success of Braff and Donald Faison’s rewatch podcast, “Fake Doctors, Real Friends.”
This new “Scrubs” will be a significant undertaking for Lawrence, who currently juggles several projects including “Ted Lasso” and “Bad Monkey” for Apple TV+. However, the prospect of a “Scrubs” reboot appears to hold significant appeal, as evidenced by Lawrence’s previous comments to Variety regarding the project. This reboot represents a reunion for Lawrence with his former studio partners at 20th Television.
