Sun Dec 08 17:09:21 UTC 2024: ## Verstappen Wins Chaotic Qatar Grand Prix, Constructors’ Championship Headed to Abu Dhabi Showdown

DOHA, Qatar – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dominated the penultimate race of the 2024 Formula 1 season in Qatar, securing victory from pole-sitter George Russell. However, the race was far from straightforward, marked by numerous incidents and penalties that ultimately set up a thrilling constructors’ championship finale in Abu Dhabi.

Verstappen took the lead on the opening lap and maintained his position throughout the race, despite a chaotic midfield battle. The race was punctuated by a safety car period triggered by a collision involving several drivers and a stray wing mirror on the track. This safety car period, along with a series of incidents, created a tense and unpredictable race.

McLaren’s Lando Norris, winner of Saturday’s sprint race, faced a significant setback with a 10-second stop-and-go penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under yellow flags. This penalty, coupled with other incidents, significantly impacted the constructors’ championship standings. Ferrari now has a realistic chance to overtake McLaren in the final race.

Lewis Hamilton had a particularly disastrous race. He received a five-second penalty for a jump start and a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane, ultimately finishing far down the field. Several other drivers also suffered penalties and retirements, including Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg.

The intense battle for the constructors’ championship will now be decided at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. With the points gap narrowed significantly after the Qatar Grand Prix, the fight between McLaren and Ferrari promises to be a nail-biting conclusion to the season. Verstappen’s victory further solidifies his position as world champion.
