Sat Dec 07 21:30:00 UTC 2024: **Giant Longhorn Mascot Bevo Benched for SEC Championship Game Due to Space Constraints**

ATLANTA, GA – The highly anticipated rematch between the No. 2 Texas Longhorns and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday will be missing one key element: Bevo XV, the Longhorns’ massive mascot. Due to space limitations at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the 1,700-pound longhorn will not be attending the SEC Championship game.

An SEC spokesman cited the sheer size of Bevo XV and the difficulty in providing a suitably large and safe enclosure within the stadium as the reason for his absence. The statement emphasized that the limited sideline space, already occupied by television and camera equipment, made it impossible to safely accommodate the enormous animal without compromising the safety of both Bevo and the game participants.

While Bevo’s handlers, the Silver Spurs, claim he’s the largest live mascot in college athletics, his absence contrasts with the presence of Uga XI, the Georgia Bulldogs’ bulldog mascot, who is expected to attend. Uga XI’s owner has previously cited travel logistics as a reason for the bulldog’s absence from several away games this season.

The decision marks a change from last year, when Bevo did travel to a playoff game. The 2019 Sugar Bowl, however, saw Bevo famously break free from his pen, creating a memorable (if chaotic) pregame moment. This incident, however, was attributed by Uga XI’s owner to boredom rather than aggression towards the bulldog mascot.
