**TIRUPPUR, December 6, 2024** – A state government initiative providing free bus travel for women in Tamil Nadu has seen remarkable success in Tiruppur district. Since its launch in 2021, women have utilized the scheme for a staggering 17.81 crore trips across 254 buses.

The scheme’s impact is felt across the district, including Tiruppur, Palladam, Kangeyam, Dharapuram, and Udumalpet, benefiting both students and working women. District Collector T. Christuraj highlighted the scheme’s contribution to increased female labor participation and improved family finances.

Individual testimonies underscore the scheme’s positive impact. Jyothi, a nurse, reports monthly savings of ₹1,000, while Ambika, employed in insurance, saves ₹1,200 per month. These savings represent significant portions of their incomes.

A 2022 State Planning Commission study estimated that the scheme helps women save approximately 11.4% of their monthly income. The study, conducted in Tiruppur, Nagapattinam, and Madurai, revealed that around 70% of the scheme’s beneficiaries reside in rural areas surrounding urban centers, highlighting its contribution to empowering women from rural backgrounds. The study emphasized the importance of mobility as a key element of women’s empowerment.
