Sat Dec 07 15:20:00 UTC 2024: ## IMD Predicts Cold Wave, Heavy Rains Across India Over Next Week

**New Delhi, December 7, 2023** – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a cold wave across several states over the next seven days, along with heavy rainfall in southern India and dense fog in the north.

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between December 10th and 13th, with some coastal areas potentially experiencing heavy downpours on December 12th. Similar conditions are anticipated in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on December 11th and 12th, and Kerala and Mahe between December 11th and 13th.

Western disturbances will impact northern India, leading to light to moderate rain or snow in the Himalayan region and dense fog in the northern plains and parts of eastern states. A cold wave is likely to continue in parts of Rajasthan. Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh may experience light rain on December 8th and 9th. Dense fog is expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until December 9th, with similar conditions predicted for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim in the coming days. Himachal Pradesh will see fog in the mornings from December 10th to 12th. A significant temperature drop and cold wave conditions are anticipated in northern Rajasthan from December 9th to 13th.

The IMD attributes these weather patterns to a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, expected to intensify and move towards Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka by December 11th. The western disturbances are causing the cold wave, dense fog, and snowfall in the northern regions.
