Sat Dec 07 09:09:35 UTC 2024: ## Notre-Dame Cathedral Reopens After Five-Year Restoration Following Devastating 2019 Fire

**PARIS, FRANCE** – After a five-year, €840 million restoration project, Notre-Dame Cathedral is set to reopen this weekend, culminating in a highly anticipated ceremony on Saturday attended by numerous heads of state and dignitaries. The iconic Gothic masterpiece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was severely damaged by a devastating fire on April 15, 2019, that gutted the roof and spire.

The blaze, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault or a discarded cigarette, raged for 15 hours, requiring the efforts of over 400 firefighters. While no members of the public were injured, the fire caused extensive damage, destroying the centuries-old wooden roof structure and spire. The melted lead roof and ensuing toxic dust posed further challenges during the cleanup and restoration.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who pledged to rebuild the cathedral within five years, praised the approximately 2,000 workers involved in the restoration. The project involved meticulous craftsmanship, including hand-hewing giant oak beams to recreate the intricate roof frame. Donations poured in from around the world, totaling over €840 million ($889 million).

Saturday’s ceremony will feature a multitude of world leaders, including President-elect Donald Trump, Prince William, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. While Pope Francis will be absent, a papal message will be read. The event will include musical performances featuring the cathedral’s massive organ, a film commemorating the fire and reconstruction, and a final blessing from Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich.

Following the ceremony, the cathedral will open to the public, initially with special masses scheduled for the next eight days, some of which will be open to the public. While some exterior restoration work will continue for a few more years, the reopening marks a significant milestone in the recovery of a beloved national symbol.
