Sat Dec 07 04:17:54 UTC 2024: ## India Issues Urgent Travel Warning Amidst Rapidly Deteriorating Situation in Syria

**New Delhi, December 6, 2024** – The Indian government issued a late-night advisory urging all Indian citizens to immediately avoid all travel to Syria, citing a rapidly worsening security situation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the advisory following a significant offensive by Islamist rebel groups, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), aiming to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

The advisory, which includes an emergency helpline (+963 993385973, also accessible via WhatsApp) and email address (hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in), instructs Indians currently in Syria to contact the Indian Embassy in Damascus. Those able to leave are advised to do so immediately via commercial flights, while those unable to depart are urged to exercise extreme caution and minimize their movements.

Rebel forces have made significant gains in recent days, capturing key cities including Aleppo and Hama – marking the first time these cities have fallen out of government control since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The rebels, led by Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, a former associate of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, are reportedly within kilometers of Homs, a strategically important city. The swiftness of the offensive has left the Assad regime, which has ruled Syria for five decades, vulnerable to potential collapse.

The situation has prompted emergency diplomatic discussions. Turkey, a supporter of the rebels, announced that its foreign minister will meet with his Russian and Iranian counterparts in Qatar to discuss the crisis. Meanwhile, the political wing of the rebel coalition has reportedly reached out to Russia and China seeking diplomatic recognition. Iran, Iraq, and Syria also held a meeting in Baghdad to address the unfolding events. Russia, while not yet publicly revealing its strategy, has hinted at providing limited support to the Assad regime. The international community is closely monitoring the situation as Syria’s fate hangs in the balance.
