**Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, December 7, 2024** – Four Myanmar fishermen, adrift at sea for nearly three weeks, were rescued by the Indian Coast Guard and brought to Nagapattinam port on Friday. The fishermen, who only speak Burmese, had embarked on a traditional bamboo raft from Bogale, Myanmar, on November 7th. Severe weather conditions, including rough seas and the aftermath of recent floods, caused their anchor to break, leaving them adrift over 1,000 nautical miles into Indian waters.
The fishermen, identified as Kyi Lucin (58), Aung Sanage (23), Win Zaw (48), and Than Soe (43), were found weak and starving on their small, motorless bamboo raft by local Indian fishermen. The locals provided food and immediately contacted the Coast Guard. A rescue vessel swiftly brought the men and their raft to port.
The rescued fishermen are currently in the custody of Nagapattinam Marine Police. With the assistance of local Burmese speakers, their identities were confirmed, and it was determined they had simply lost their way. The Myanmar embassy has been notified to assist with further identification and legal proceedings. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed, and the fishermen are expected to appear before the Chennai Metropolitan Court by Saturday night.
